Scary biscuits!

Simpsons afficionados will recognise Marge’s sampler on the wall displaying the family motto –

I wish I’d paid attention!

I wandered off through some footnotes after my last post and found some disconcerting stuff.  It’s Paul writing again, in a letter to friends in Corinth, and this time he says something that brought me up short –

“[God] brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.  So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, ‘Come back to God!’  For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin,so that we could be made right with God through Christ.”

What on earth does Paul mean that, “God has given us this task of reconciling people to him”?  I don’t think he can mean it in an ultimate sense, but is he saying something like, “If Jesus has stood in the gap for me then I need to stand in the gap for others, being a peacemaker in human relationships and pointing people to the one Mediator between God and man?”

As they say, “Scary biscuits!”
